MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's previous center-right government "manipulated and twisted" the Madrid train bombings of March 2004 in a bid to salvage general elections three days later, a parliamentary commission found on Wednesday.

In a 200-page report after a year of bitter wrangling, the commission accused Jose Maria Aznar's Popular Party (PP) government of ignoring police warnings that its support for the Iraq war increased the threat from Islamic terrorism in Spain.

He needed a Rove if it was to work.

Democrats find 2004 voting problems in Ohio

More than a quarter of voters, and more than half of black voters, experienced problems at Ohio polling places during the 2004 presidential vote, a Democratic Party report said on Wednesday.

The report cited long lines that discouraged voting, poorly trained election officials and difficulties with registration status, polling locations and absentee ballots.

Nearly one quarter of Ohio voters felt their experience in 2004 had left them less confident about the reliability of elections in the state, according to the analysis.

"The data clearly indicates that the system failed far too many Ohio voters," said Donna Brazile, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee's Voting Rights Institute and the project's leader.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman called the report "pure political fiction."

"Those long lines in black neighborhoods were actually people lined up to see the movie Ray, which was showing down the street." Mehlman continued.

Judges to consider Quran use for oaths

The state's judges will be asked this week to decide whether witnesses in North Carolina courtrooms can be sworn in on a Quran rather than a Bible.

The move comes after Guilford County judges rejected an offer last week by the Greensboro Islamic center to donate copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy book. [emphasis mine]

One of the nagging questions of the Valerie Plame case has always been who in the White House would have even known who Valerie Plame, covert CIA operative, actually was. The identity of covert agents is strictly compartmentalized information; even in high-level briefings on the actions or intelligence gathered by those agents, the agents themselves are identified by alias or code, not by name. The reasons for this practice are obvious.
And, in the case of the White House, there was hardly a pressing need to know the identity of one Ms. Valerie Plame. It is middlingly possible that members of the Bush Administration knew Mrs. Valerie Wilson as wife of Ambassador Joseph Wilson. It is less possible that more than a tight handful of persons -- if that -- would have known Valerie Plame, covert CIA operative. The highest crime in the Wilson/Plame case likely does not revolve principally around who, precisely, shopped the information about Plame's covert status to Novak and other D.C. journalists: instead, it rests with who told that political operative -- the one with a full rolodex and the skill to select presumed-friendly leak points -- that Plame was a CIA operative in the first place, and worthy of attack. Among the White House political staff, there was precisely zero need to know this information -- and if classified intelligence procedures were being followed, no opportunities to find out.

It is undisputed among all parties that Plame's covert work involved principally the gathering of intelligence related to weapons of mass destruction, which put her at an important nexus of operations in the runup to the Iraq War. At another nexus point across town, during the same period, was John Bolton.

Dad picks up $600 tab for son's Iraq body armor

Marine Pfc. Jeremy Tod, 19, called home with news that his superiors were urging him and fellow Marines to buy special military equipment, including flak jackets with armor plating, to enhance the prospects of their survival.

The message was that such purchases were to be made by Marines with their own money.

"He said they strongly suggested he get this equipment because when they get to Iraq they will wish they had," Tod said.

Total estimated cost: $600.

Remember back to the eighties when those cute child drawn posters were made by a kid: "wouldn't it be a wonderful world where the army had to have a bakesale to buy a tank and school's could have all the money they needed?"

Well were half way there. Now everyone needs to have a bakesale... except for those who can afford their own bakery I guess.

We treat the most important professions in our society with the most disdain. Teaching in schools is an act of charity. Teachers have to buy their own supplies, pay for their own copies, and buy students books. Teachers make sure we have useful citizens.

Soldiers don't create useful citizens but they protect them by making sure that our nation is free and secure (well if used properly), and now we can't even bother to supply them with armor?

Oh yeah, I'm sorry, we've got to give some money to them folks over at Boeing. Coffee's expensive in Seattle dontcha know.
