Can you guess which 3 countries' flags are missing from this list?

I'll bet you can answer it without even looking.

Silver Linings and a Cross of Gold
It turns out there's an upside to the current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah—if you're waiting for the second coming of Christ. Here's a selection of excited messages spotted over the last few days on the Rapture Ready/End Times Chat online bulletin board.
Praise God! We are chosen to be in these times and also watch and spread the word. Something inside me is exploding to get out, and I don't know what it is. Its kind of like I want to do cartwheels around the neighborhood.
...
In another thread, someone brought up the fact that the kidnapping of the first Israeli soldier that started this whole thing was on June 25th and if you count from that day to August 3rd.......it is *EXACTLY 40 days!!!!!*

I find that to be a HUGE coincidence.
...
I am excited beyond words that the struggle of this life may be over soon and I can finally be FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Think of the sad life - feeling trapped in life, and believing your true happiness lies in the end of it all.

But all this gives my an opportunity of reprinting a year old TCS post.
All of this apocalypse talk reminded me of George Rapp (believe it or not it really did).

Rapp wasn't alone amongst his 19th century contemporaries in believing the end was nigh. He decided the best way to prepare was to create a more pure society. In fact he and 1,700 of his followers did set up a commune in Pennsylvania.

But what popped into my mind after reading all this crap about the Dominionists waiting for the rapture (not the Blondie song) was Mr. Rapp's death bed statement:
If I did not know that the dear Lord meant I should present you all to him, I should think my last moment's come.
Well - surprise! that was his last moment. Waaay back in 1847.
Sorry folks - the world ain't ending.

One Man Can Make a Difference

Bush has changed the world - it is a much more dangerous - it is more unstable - it is less free.

It will take many many many men and women many many many years to undo the damage this man wrought.

Turkey Signals It's Prepared to Enter Iraq
Turkish officials signaled Tuesday they are prepared to send the army into northern Iraq if U.S. and Iraqi forces do not take steps to combat Turkish Kurdish guerrillas there - a move that could put Turkey on a collision course with the United States.

You know, the last time I recommend to my boss that we should go to war to protect the nation from WMDs that didn't exist, and the war basically destroyed the nation we invaded and killed thousands of our own troop I didn't even get a bonus.

Report: DHS workers wasted thousands
Audit: iPods, dog booties, beer-making equipment among expenses
WASHINGTON - The Homeland Security Department wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars last year on iPods, dog booties, beer-making equipment and designer jackets, congressional investigators have concluded.
Look - I think we may be rushing to judgement here.

Let's look at the fact - DHS runs FEMA. FEMA dogs are being walked around in some of the ruined parts of New Orleans, so of course they'd need booties - what with all the debris and tained soil still around. And the ipods are so employees don't have to listen to the verbal abuse they hear when people ask why they aren't doing their job.
More than 100 laptop computers and a dozen boats also bought by Homeland Security employees are missing, the investigators found.
I'd understand a few missing laptops - with the obesity in America there a lot of laps that are missing - but how do you lose a dozen boats? Really hungry wood eating sharks?

Think Progress - Brownback Holds Up Drawing Of Embryo, Asks "Are You Going To Kill Me?"

And this circle here represents the tens of thousands that will suffer from disease and die because research into possible cures via stem cells was stopped by insanely stupid Senators like me.

And see that "X" that represents the fact that the blastocysts we are talking about would be thrown away anyway - so this whole 'no' vote from me is really meaningless if you buy the idea that I really do believe my 'no' vote is about 'saving lives'

Actually this is what he said.
This is a chart she did last year when she was in Washington, talking, when the House was considering legislation, the same legislation, she did this chart, this letter that kids write — my kids write — I love them. She said, this is Hannah, snowflake, “We’re kids. I love you.” And then she draws three pictures down here below. This is her smiling because she got adopted and she’s here. Here is another frozen embryo — these are embryos — that’s sad because he’s still sitting in a frozen state and then here’s one that as she explains is saying “What, are you going to kill me?” This was her explanation to her mother that just gave this chart to me. I hope people really would think about that. This is not just a clump of tissue. This is not just a group of a few cells. This is not a hair follicle. This is not fingernail. You know, this is Hannah. And if nurtured, grows to be just this beautiful child, and we got a lot of them, of frozen embryos.
I think we really have got to distingish "potential" from actual "life."

Do I need to sing "every sperm is scared" again?

Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

- Monty Python (of course)

I imagine Brownback's college days: "Come on - we have to have sex, if not the egg you ovulated will be killed. In fact we have to have sex every month at least. Yes, I understand this is our first date, but come one - we're talking about life here, not just a glob of tissue."

Gonzales: Bush blocked eavesdropping probe
WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Tuesday that President Bush personally blocked Justice Department lawyers from pursuing an internal probe of the warrantless eavesdropping program that monitors Americans' international calls and e-mails when terrorism is suspected.
At this point should they even put "when terrorism is suspected" and say factually "allegedly when terrorism is suspected" because at this point I think it is very fair to suspect that they are spying on the press as well.
Under sharp questioning from Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Arlen Specter, Gonzales said that Bush would not grant the access needed to allow the probe to move forward.

"It was highly classified, very important and many other lawyers had access. Why not OPR?" asked Specter, R-Pa.

"The president of the United States makes the decision," Gonzales told the committee hearing....

It isn't just that he feels so entitled that he can go up to a woman and give her a message even though he barely knows her.

It isn't just that he feels so entitled that he can do it at a meeting in which the woman is an equal.

It isn't just that he feels so entitled that he can do it to a world leader.

Its that he has an empty blank dead look in his eye as he stares forward and roboticly moves away after his advances are shunned.

I don't think it'll be until mid August before this site gets back to semi-regular updates.

But do keep checking in we may put up an amazing piece that sums up the political zeitgeist for a moment of clarity that will, like an epiphany, make all of the sad sad world seem purposeful. And if you miss that Eureka moment, the hole deep inside your heart that this century has made larger will never be filled.

Or we could just post photos of robot Bush harassing women - its a crap shoot really.

White House spokesman Tony Snow really does speak for the White House.

Bush rejects Lebanese call for cease-fire
"We think it's important that, in doing that, they try to limit as much as possible the so-called collateral damage, not only on civilians but also on human lives," Snow said.
Not only civilians but humans too!

Shit shit shit

Look the truth is when a lot of the world has turned to shit, and you are somewhat responsible I can see you actually using the word shit.

So what.

But do watch the video - Bush is just arrogantly talking with his mouthful to another head of state. I found it quiet rude. It comes off as arrogant (not President Johnson dictating memos while on the john arrogant, but still really unstatesman like).

Bush caught off-guard in chat with Blair
President: 'They need ... to get Hezbollah to stop doing this s___'

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American people."
- Teddy Roosevelt

"Government has a final responsibility for the well-being of its citizenship. If private cooperative endeavor fails to provide work for willing hands and relief for the unfortunate, those suffering hardship from no fault of their own have a right to call upon the Government for aid; and a government worthy of its name must make fitting response."
 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt

"I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and Constitutions, but laws must and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."
- Thomas Jefferson

"The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home."

"All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree."
- James Madison

"I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, in the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas. It is, I believe, the faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith. For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves."
- John F. Kennedy

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are [a] few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."
- Dwight D. Eisenhower
